How to Transfer Contacts to A New iPhone 7

--Wednesday, Dec.07, 2016

People used to have strong connection with families, friends and neighbors in the past. There was no mobile phone at that time. Though nowadays mobile phone is common and pervasive, it seems magical back to the old times. Therefore, people liked to get close to each other and have a long talk face to face. In contrary to that, we now get used to doing most chats on a square little thing. Even if the connection might not as strong as it used to be in the old days, we now are able to keep in touch with almost everyone we know wherever and whenever.

We store phone numbers of people with whom we are acquainted into our phones, and the more people you know, the longer the contact list would be. To some extent, contacts are what make us feel connected. However, it's annoying that contacts would be erased and gone as long as one upgrades his/her phone to a new one. Especially, iPhone cannot store contacts in SIM card, which means you should find means to migrate your contacts from an old iPhone to a new iPhone. In fact, there are four ways available, if you've currently upgraded to a new iPhone 7/7 Plus. Please feel free to read on and learn how to move contacts.

Transfer Contacts to iPhone

As the methods recommended by Apple, using iTunes and iCloud to move contacts seems trustworthy and feasible. Actually, it works by simply restoring contacts from an iTunes/iCloud backup done in advance. Please continue to read more details in the following two sections.

Method 1: Migrate iPhone Contacts to New iPhone through iCloud

Make an iCloud Backup in Advance:

Step 1. Get your old iPhone connected to a good Wi-Fi network.

Step 2. Navigate to "Settings" > "iCloud" > "Backup".

Step 3. Ensure that "iCloud Backup" is enabled.

Step 4. Tap "Back Up Now" and begin backing up your device.

Note that iPhone must stay connected to Wi-Fi till the process is complete.

Restore Contacts from Previous iCloud Backup

Step 1. Turn on your new iPhone. Press the "Home Button" when "Hello" screen shows up. (However, if you've set up your new device, you should erase it to proceed by going to "Settings" > "General" > "Reset" > "Erase All Content and Settings".)

Step 2. Choose a Wi-Fi and enter password to join the network.

Step 3. Now, you can see the "App & Data" screen. Please select "Restore from iTunes Backup" option and sign in iCloud with your Apple ID and Password.

Step 4. Stay connected to Wi-Fi until the restore process is done.

Note that you can otherwise try iPhone Data Recovery to restore your iCloud backup without erasing your iPhone.

Method 2: Move iPhone Contacts to New iPhone using iTunes

Make an iTunes Backup in Advance:

Step 1. Launch the latest version of iTunes on your computer.

Step 2. Connect the old iPhone to it with a USB cable.

Step 3. Click "Device" icon and enter "Summary" page.

Step 4. Select "This computer" and "Back Up Now".

Step 5. Keep your device connected to iTunes until the backup process finishes.

Note that if you don't encrypt your iTunes backup, Health and Activity data from your iOS device or Apple Watch won't be saved.

Restore Contacts from Previous iTunes Backup

Step 1. Turn on your new iPhone. When you see the "Hello" screen, press the "Home Button" and follow the steps until you see the "App & Data" screen.

Step 2. Now choose "Restore from iTunes Backup" option.

Step 3. Get your new iPhone connected to iTunes on computer.

Step 4. Select "Restore Backup" and choose the previous backup to restore. Please make sure that it's the right backup via looking at the date and size.

Step 5. Stay connected to iTunes until the restore process completes.

Note that if you've set up your new iPhone before, just connect it to iTunes and navigate to "File" > "Devices" > "Restore from backup", or try iPhone Data Recovery in order to keep data currently stored on new iPhone.

Method 3: Selectively Transfer iPhone Contacts to New iPhone

iPhone Transfer is a reputable software dedicated to helping users selectively transfer a variety of data between iDevices to Computers/iDevices. Also, users are allowed to edit, delete or de-duplicate contacts with ease. Now, let's see how it works.

Step 1. Launch iPhone Transfer

Please download and install iPhone Transfer to proceed and connect both your old iPhone and new iPhone to it. If the two devices are successfully connected, they will be show on the left interface. Please don't unplug any of both during the whole process.

Launch iPhone Transfer

Step 2. Transfer Contacts to the New iPhone

Please choose "Contacts" option under the name of your old device. Next, you can preview contacts after they are loaded and listed on the screen. Just tick up as many contacts as you'd like to transfer. Then, click "Import/Export" > "Export Selected Contacts" or "Export All Contacts" > "Name of your new iPhone" and wait till the transfer process is compete.

Note that you're able to edit, delete or de-duplicate contacts before the transfer. Also, you can export/import contacts to/from your computer without a hitch.

Method 4: Share iPhone Contacts to New iPhone via Contacts App

If there are not so many contacts, or you just want to keep some of them, please try to directly share your contacts via Message, Email or other social apps. However, note that it's only able to export one contact at a time. Therefore, this method might not be suitable for those who want to transfer a bunch of contacts.

Step 1. Open "Contacts" app on your old iPhone.

Step 2. Select and preview a certain contact.

Step 3. Tap on "Share Contact" button.

Step 4. Choose "Messages", "Mail" or "More". Then, follow the steps and export the contact.

Step 5. Check out the received messages or email on your new iPhone.

Step 6. Copy the contact and save it as a new contact.
