Steps to Retrieve Lost/Deleted Files on iPhone

Would you be anxious when being out of mobile phone contact? Would it upsets you when your handset is not around? With the popularity of mobile phone, a unique disease known as 'Nomophobia', which means the fear of being without phones nearby. Anxiety disorder is one of its symptoms. Moreover, data loss of important files on smartphones would make it worse. However, by accident or on purpose, data loss is somehow inevitable. There are some common reasons that cause data loss on iPhone.


1. Inadvertently deleted contents when managing files on iPhone.

2. Deleted by playful children when they're using your iPhone.

3. iPhone is broken/damage/stolen due to any reasons.

4. Data loss happens after iOS update or jailbreak.

5. Restore data from backups via iTunes/iCloud.

6. Data loss somehow happens without knowledge.

If you're troubled by data loss, I'm going to present you three solutions in detail here. Please read on this post and learn how to restore data in three ways. And, let's start with the feasibility of retrieving data on iPhone.

Feasibility: Is It Possible to Restore Lost Data on iPhone?

Many iPhone users might have this misgiving: Whether is it possible to restore lost/deleted data on iPhone? The answer is certainly yes. If you have done backups for your iPhone via iTunes or synced files with iCloud, you can always recover lost/deleted contents from these backups with easy steps. However, restoring data via iTunes or iCloud will result in the data loss of your current data. Whether it is worthy or not, that is totally up to you.

If there are no backups available, it would be a bit complex but still possible. Technically, files got invisible and inaccessible on iPhone after the deletion. They will still exist on the device as long as not yet overwritten by new data. So, please bear in mind that you must stop using your iPhone as soon as data gets lost and no backups are available.

Possible to Restore Lost Data

Method 1: Recover Lost Files without Any Backup

Actually, there are two types of data still able to recover directly on iPhone, which are respectively "Photos" and "Notes". You can view and recover them in the "Recently Deleted" album/folder within 30 days after the deletion. However, in order to access other lost/deleted contents, you should resort to a professional software, well-known as iPhone Data Recovery, which supports most models of iPhone, including iPhone 7/7 Plus. Moreover, up-to-20 types of files are able to be restored directly from iPhone.

Step 1. Start Scanning out Lost Files

Please download and install iPhone Data Recovery for the first time. Next, launch the program and connect your iPhone to it. Then, please click on "Recover from iOS Device" and choose desired types of data. After that, hit the "Start Scan" button to start scanning for the lost data.

Note that if you've chosen quite a few kinds of data, it might take quite a while to complete scanning. You can do something else until it finishes.

Step 2. View and Restore Lost Data

After done scanning, users are allowed to preview those files before the recovery. Lost/Deleted items will be marked in red. Then, you are allowed to selectively restore files to computer or device. Please choose files and tap on "Restore to device" or "Recover to Computer".

Note that there are three types of files currently supported to directly restore back to iOS device, which are Contacts, Messages, and Notes.

Method 2: Retrieve Deleted Data from an iTunes Backup

If any iTunes backup is available on Mac/PC, you can easily restore from it via iTunes: go to "File" > "Devices" > "Restore from backup". Note that this method will wipe out your current data so as to restore data from iTunes backup. Or, you can try iPhone Data Recovery, which has no such a drawback.

Run iPhone Data Recovery and choose "Recover from iTunes Backup File". Previous iTunes backups will be automatically listed on the interface. Please choose one to scan.

Note that if you've changed the default position of iTunes backups, you would have to locate the backup files manually.

Step 2. Preview and Restore Lost Files

When the scanning completes, you can preview files in detail. Then, you are able to selectively choose and restore data to computer or device without a hitch. Then, all the data will be recovered to computer/device safe and sound.

Method 3: Restore Missing Contents from an iCloud Backup

Normally, most iOS users get used to enabling iCloud auto backup and syncing files with iCloud. Therefore, lost data is possible to restore from iCloud backups. Each time after you reset your iPhone, it will prompt you whether to restore from an iCloud backup. However, similar to the method of iTunes, this method will also erase all the contents before the restoration. If you'd like to keep existing data, you can have a try oniPhone Data Recovery.

Step 1. Download Desired Files from iCloud

Open iPhone Data Recovery and choose "Recover from iCloud Backup File" from the left panel. Next, please type in your iCloud account in order to access iCloud backup files. Our software will not record any personal information, so please be reassured.

You can preview those downloaded files and export them to computer or restore to iPhone. After you select the route, your files will be saved to Mac/PC without any loss.

Tips & Tricks: How to Prevent Data Loss on iPhone?

Data loss of important files could be such a disaster. Though it might happen somehow, you can in fact prevent it. Please check the tips and tricks below.

1. Be careful and attentive when children are playing your iPhone or sitting nearby. Also, you can just pick up the iPhone and put it into your pocket or handbag.

2. Arm your iPhone with screen protector and case in case of damaging/breaking it.

3. Be preoccupied when deleting redundant and insignificant files, and don't get distracted. If you're tired, stop to take a rest and continue lately.

4. Form a good habit of backing up data on your iPhone regularly. As an old saying goes, always prepare for a rainy day.
